GHB is used as a recreational substance for its psychoactive effects, which are often described as a combination of MDMA and alcohol. While a common recreational dose is between 1.5 – 2.5 grams, a dose between 2.5 grams and 5 grams will likely result in falling asleep within 5 – 15 minutes.

At lower doses, GHB is physically stimulating, encouraging movement and wakefulness. At higher doses, however, it becomes physically sedating, encouraging sleep and lethargy.

Users feel drunk and often start to lose muscle coordination like alcohol but also experience an undeniable feeling of euphoria and energy. GHB induces profound muscle relaxation similar to, but more intense than, the relaxation produced by benzodiazepines and alcohol. This muscle relaxation is accompanied with a general loss of motor control, which may put the user at increased risk of physical injury.

GHB is also linked with a heightened libido, auditory or visual hallucinations (in higher doses), and a sense of relaxation and contentedness.

Taking too much GHB often leads to blackouts. Users wake up the following morning with little to no memory of the night before.

GHB has acquired a reputation as a “date rape drug,” in which it is purportedly secretly placed into alcoholic drinks. There is very limited evidence to suggest that this actually happens but care should always be taken when accepting drinks from strangers.

GHB is really salty, and you only need a little bit for a powerful dose. This makes it easier to smuggle into various shows or festivals than many other drugs.

The problem is that because GHB is so strong, it’s not hard to overdose. The consequences of overdosing on GHB can be fatal.
